God, Our Ultimate Mentor

God wants us to look to Him for advice and mentorship.

He tore the veil for a reason. He did everything to remove every obstacle between us having a close relationship with Him. He wants to have the final say in our lives. He wants to hold this spot in our lives. We should feel most safe to consult, depend, confide, and revere Him.

Yet, we feel more secure trusting people instead of God. We cry out to God to send us mentors. We won't allow ourselves to move forward without the approval of a mentor. We repeat the same sin of the children of Israel when they demanded a King.

Why are we like this?

God suffers CONSTANT rejection from us! We continue to create idols to worship because we just CANT bring ourselves to believe and depend on God. It's idolatry, and it hurts Him!

Dont get me wrong...

Leaders are necessary but they have ONE job: to lead people to JESUS! Mentorship should be leading people to stand on their own! Find God on their own. Minister on their own.

Leaders shouldn't only hand out the fish; they should SHOW people how to catch their own. They should lead people to the Source, NOT TO THEMSELVES. Leaders should not feel comfortable with people following FOREVER!

The job is to help people identify and develop their gifts and calling and to show them WHERE to get the power to fuel them.

It should never be a long-term drawn-out ordeal where followers have a toxic emotional/spiritual dependency and even fear of functioning without them.

There is judgement for PREFERRING/TRUSTING in man over God. The consequences look like this:

  • Failure to launch.

  • Stifling of gifts.

  • Lost identity.

  • Delay.

  • Feelings of Rejection/Being Overlooked.

  • Low self-esteem.

  • Low self-worth.

  • Spiritual frustration.

  • Stagnation.

  • Blindness.

  • Deafness.

  • Confusion.

This message is for you if you've been praying and asking God for a mentor for a while, but one has not come your way.

Or.....you already have a mentor and your life is going down the drain. If someone is sent by God to lead you, you should flourish under their leadership. (Read 2 Chronicles 20:20)

For some people, God does not want you to be mentored by man. He wants to be your mentor!

Stop asking Him for someone else.

If you are in a God-ordained mentorship situation...PLEASE KNOW:

  • The mentorship is temporary

  • It should be PREPARING/EQUIPPING you to stand on your own

  • You should SEE fruits of increase and progress

  • Your understanding of God should get DEEPER

  • You should feel MORE confident to go to God for yourself as the mentorship continues.

See below:

Scripture:

1 Samuel 8:7-10 - But when they said, "Give us a king to lead us," this displeased Samuel; so he prayed to the LORD.

And the LORD told him: "Listen to all that the people are saying to you; it is not you they have rejected, but they have rejected me as their king.

As they have done from the day I brought them up out of Egypt until this day, forsaking me and serving other gods, so they are doing to you.

Now listen to them; but warn them solemnly and let them know what the king who will reign over them will do."
